Ricky initially keeps the news from Brax, but tells him in a bid to halt his revenge campaign against Jake. Martin "Ash" Ashford turns up looking for Brax and he tells Ricky that he a friend from prison. Ricky grows uncomfortable with Brax and Ash's friendship, especially when Brax misses an ultrasound appointment to help Ash. At their rescheduled appointment, they learn they are expecting a boy. Ricky helps organise a trip to the city to support Phoebe Nicholson's record launch.
In 2016, Kyle meets a girl named Isla Schultz and discovered she is working with Dave, who Kyle owes money to, to warn him that he is coming for him. To protect his family, he told the police before Dave kidnapped him and Isla, who also owes Dave, before he was able to fight him off and the police arrest Dave. He soon discovers Isla has two daughters and is decla and unfit mother before realising she's going to rob a betting store. After getting her to flee the scene, he stays behind to take the fall and is arrested.
Phoebe Nicholson
He was initially contracted to appear in about sixteen episodes and he began shooting his first scenes in September. He comes to Summer Bay to visit Spencer and convince him to return home and sort things out with his family. When Brax is released from prison he tries to win Ricky back. Nate visits Brax to request that he leave Ricky alone and avoid complicating her life. Sveen believed that Nate's actions were motivated purely out of concern for Ricky. However, Ricky is defined as an independent woman and would not like Nate intervening.
When Phoebe finds out what Kyle has been doing since he left Melbourne, she is disgusted and gives Kyle an ultimatum - either move back to Melbourne with her or stay in the bay and never see her again. They take Kyle to Summer Bay and force him to testify to help Casey avoid prison. He tells Brax that he wants to be a part of the family and he invites Kyle to move in. Kyle befriends Liam Murphy but is angry when he catches him stealing from Angelo's. Kyle develops feelings for Tamara as they continue to work together at Angelo's.

Realising that they had gone too far, Ricky pleaded with Adam to stop his revenge campaign against the Braxtons. Phoebe's dad Mark Nicholson arrives in the bay and disapproves of Kyle and Phoebe relationship once he finds out his surname was changed to Braxton. As a lawyer, he looks into Kyle's past and his family's past and warns Phoebe that Kyle is not good for her.
Nate is described as a "fighter" who keeps on progressing despite a troubled personal life. Other character's are drawn to Nate due to his positive outlook on life. He comes to work Northern Districts Hospital because he had longed "for the adrenalin rush a busy Emergency Department provides." Nate is a respected medic and fellow residents appreciate his skills. Nate is a calm character and it takes a lot of drama to unsettle him.
Relationship with Ricky Sharpe
When Ricky takes the baby to see Brax for the first time, they agree to name him Casey. Nate supported Ricky through her miscarriage and when she got caught up in a bomb explosion at the hospital. Having accepted that her relationship with Brax was over for good, Ricky decided to move on with Nate.
Sveen explained that Nate appealed to Ricky as he did not have baggage, and he was not dangerous or complicated. He also believed in Ricky and wanted to see her achieve her dreams. Ricky was "braced for disapproval" from the Braxtons and she was not looking forward to the repercussions, but Sveen said she would not let herself be defined by other people's opinions.

She is furious with Nate for keeping his marital status a secret, which leaves Nate confused as she is back with Brax. Sneddon told an Inside Soap reporter that Nate and Sophie's marriage was ruined by Sophie's drug addiction. She explained that writers created a backstory in which Sophie was involved in a car accident and relied on pain killers in her recovery.
When Ricky confronts Nate he reveals that Sophie has a history of mental health issues. He reveals that when he originally called time on the marriage, she attempted to run him over. Pryor said that it was a difficult situation for Nate because he does love Sophie. "Nate believes that tough love is the only approach here." Sophie is upset and begins to forget what day it is. Sophie cannot deal with the "harsh reality" that her marriage is over.
The largely popular pairing of Ricky and Brax had a prominent fanbase. Pryor assessed that Nate is the complete opposite of Brax and the more suitable partner for Ricky. The fight for their relationship following Brax's departure as Nate is uncomfortable with Brax gifting a toy to his son. Pryor stated that Nate has reached a point where he wants to marry Ricky and start a family with her. In June 2015, it was announced that Nate would be involved in a controversial storyline in which Billie Ashford accuses him of assault.
The Barretts were initially rivals of the Braxton brothers and Hara said "There is a lot of history behind both the families. I carry the secrets of what our whole relationship is with them." Zac MacGuire, played by Charlie Clausen, made his first screen appearance on 22 January 2013. A TV Week reporter noted that the role marked something of a return to acting for Clausen. Clausen revealed that Zac has been asked to keep an eye on Casey by Natalie Davison . The actor stated that Zac is "a good guy", who began working in the prison system after spending time inside when he was younger.
He is unable to resist when she acts on her feelings and kisses him, but he pulls away and puts distance between them by moving back in with his brothers leaving Tamara devastated. Desperate for Kyle's love, Tamara confronts him and begs to know if he still loves her, but Kyle is hesitant to answer. However when Tamara announces her intent to leave Summer Bay, Kyle is unable to bare the thought of her leaving and finally gives into his feelings for her and they sleep together. His guilt over betraying Casey overwhelms him, when Casey apologizes for being angry at him for helping Tamara, and he blows up at Casey telling him that he slept with Tamara. In early April 2016, it was announced Sveen had joined the cast of The Secret Daughter alongside singer Jessica Mauboy, who encouraged producers to sign her for the show. Sveen plays the role of back-up singer Layla, while Mauboy plays Billie, a singer who goes to the city to pursue her music dreams, but finds out about her family's past at the same time.
Haddy told Erin Miller from TV Week that she did research into how teenage girls have coped with being sexually assaulted. She also hoped the storyline would show girls that they do not have to be afraid to say no to what the guy is asking. Nate decides that he wants to marry Ricky and makes plans for a proposal. Pryor told a reporter from New Idea that Nate had a vision of the perfect proposal.

She also criticises Bianca's husband, Heath Braxton , a former pupil of hers, and clearly discriminates against him. When she does the same to Mangrove River High students including Matt Page , Bianca disciplines her, and as a result Montgomery trashes her office, graffitis the word “slag” on her door, and frames Page for the crime. Wanting revenge against Bianca, she purchases a bomb and places it in Bianca's laptop bag to try and kill her. The bomb goes off at the Northern Districts Hospital, and results in the death of Ethan Macguire . When Montgomery discovers what has happened, she panics and Heath realises that she was behind the explosion.
Nate accepts the situation but the pair begin to argue more often. Ali Cromarty reported that Ricky thinks Nate will resent her for not providing him with a biological child. Nate's friend Leah Patterson-Baker begins to worry about Sophie's condition. Nate tires of Leah's interference and he becomes aggravated.
